What is Everywhere-to-Everywhere (E2E) Greenways?
Chapel Hill is working on a big plan to build a network of greenways—safe paths for walking and biking—that will help people get from everywhere to everywhere. This project, called E2E Greenways, is part of the Town’s Complete Community Strategy to make Chapel Hill more connected, fair, and environmentally friendly.
What is a feasibility study and why is it important?
People in Chapel Hill have shared where they’d like new greenways to go, and nearly 50 miles of them are now planned! But planning is just the first step— building them takes a lot more effort. The E2E project will help figure out which sections should be built first. The next big step is called a feasibility study. This project helps us figure out the best way to build over 25 miles of greenways.
It includes:
Will the Town start building these greenways when the study is complete?
Not yet. This project does not include any construction—it’s about planning and preparing for future projects. This project moves planned greenways to the next big step, which is called a Feasibility Study. It won’t lead directly to construction, but it will help the Town get ready to apply for funding and start design work in the future. For updates on current projects, visit the Transportation and Mobility Hub.
How is this project funded?
In 2023, Chapel Hill got a $1 million RAISE grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to support this project. The Town is also providing a match of $300,000 to support the work.
How does this project support access and sustainability?
When complete, the E2E Greenway network will result in 57% of Chapel Hill residents living within ¼ mile of a greenway. E2E Greenways will help everyone, especially people who don’t have access to a car, get to important places like jobs, schools, and parks. It also helps the environment by encouraging walking and biking instead of driving.
How can I get involved and share my input?
Your input is important! This website will be one of the best ways to stay informed about this project, but we have lots of other great opportunities to get involved. Between now and the end of 2026, we’ll be asking for community input through:
Who is leading the project and who else is involved?
The Town of Chapel Hill is leading the project, working with regional partners, consultants, and community groups. The team wants to make sure the greenways reflect what the community wants and needs.
What happens after the feasibility study is complete?
The Town will use the study to:
The greenways will be built in phases, depending on funding, community needs, and technical details.
