Open House Feedback: What We Heard

Many people appreciate the updates they already get about stormwater issues, but they would like clearer explanations of stormwater rules, past and current projects, and what homeowners can do to reduce runoff.

Lots of participants either already practice our tips for keeping stormwater clean or learned something new to try at home.

There were several requests for more communication through email, in-person outreach, and simple guides.

Some also said they would like more educational opportunities, such as workshops, tours, public meetings, and technical assistance to help them better understand flooding, stormwater practices, and how to improve conditions on their property.

Offer workshops on creek bank management and residential green infrastructure

Implement a homeowner assistance program similar to those offered in nearby communities.

Provide support for installing rain gardens, bioswales, and other features that help manage runoff on private property.

Proactively maintain stormwater infrastructure, including creeks and culverts.

Clarify how the Town is implementing existing plans and recommendations, especially regarding maintenance and runoff control.

Review and refresh our web and print resources to make relevant information easy to find and use.

Design educational opportunities and materials for the events we are attending and hosting this year.

Coordinate an event or workshop for residents to learn about small-scale green infrastructure improvements for their properties.

Encourage residents to reach out to the Stormwater team when they see issues such as clogged storm drains, blocked culverts, or debris in streams so that we can address them.

Learn from neighboring communities about their stormwater assistance programs and explore what that could look like in Chapel Hill.

On September 19th, we will be at Open Chapel Hill Day on Millhouse Road. On September 24th, we will be at the Good Neighbor Initiative Cookout.
