Tap of greenway with the proposed Tanyard branch connector shown along railroad tracks

The Town has started designing a small but very important greenway connector project. The Tanyard Branch Trail Neighborhood Connector will go from Board Street in Carrboro to Estes Drive Extension near the railroad tracks. It will also connect to the existing Tanyard Branch Trail and the future affordable homes at Tanyard Branch Trace. While the Tanyard Branch Trace housing developer will be constructing most of this greenway, the Town has taken responsibility for connecting it on both ends.

The vision for this project began as part of the 2009 Carolina North Development Agreement and later became the 2010 Campus-to-Campus Connector Report which identified the preferred route. The project is also in the Town's 2020 Mobility Plan. In 2023, the Chapel Hill Town Council allocated $200,000 of ARPA funds to the design of this project. The Town has hired a consultant to help lead the design phase and is working to identify funding for construction.

This project is part of Chapel Hill’s Everywhere-to-Everywhere Greenways strategy. The plan is to create a network of greenways that provide useful, accessible, safe, and connected transportation options for all ages and abilities.

Last week, Town contractors conducted ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in and around the West Chapel Hill Cemetery. The purpose of this work is to determine if there are any unmarked graves near the area where the greenway project is proposed.

The West Chapel Hill Cemetery was originally established in 1949 by the Town of Chapel Hill to be used by African American residents of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Town staff are having ongoing conversations with descendant community members regarding the significance of the cemetery and how to incorporate that significance into the project.
