Thank you for providing your feedback on potential alignments! That feedback, along with many other factors, led us to select a route.

The Bolin Creek Greenway Extension will be on the south side of Bolin Creek between Umstead Park and Village Drive, turn onto Village Drive to Umstead Drive, continue along Umstead Drive, and then run adjacent to an OWASA easement that parallels the creek to Estes Drive. The total greenway extension will be approximately 0.5 miles.

This selected route is a combination of options initially shared with the community and an approximately 350 ft. new segment along Village Drive that emerged as a result of community engagement. This route addresses shared Town and community interests, including safety, accessibility, connectivity, and a high-quality user experience.

Here’s some more about the shared interests reflected in this route:

• User experience. Like the rest of the Bolin Creek Greenway, users will have views of the creek while traveling through the woods.
• Accessibility. This route avoids steep slopes, making it more accessible for all users. Other than one small section along Village Drive, there’s no more than a 5 % slope along the entire route.
• Safety. This route keeps users away from Umstead Drive (except for one short section) and avoids a mid-block crossing on Village Drive.
• Connectivity. This will create a direct connection to future Town of Carrboro greenway projects, connect to the existing Tanyard Branch Trail, and the future Estes Dr. Ext bicycle and pedestrian improvements.

Next Steps:

• Begin detailed surveying along the corridor, in coordination with the Town Arborist.
• Coordinate with State departments and Town’s Stormwater Division for stream crossing approvals and Jordan Lake Buffer permits.
• Proceed to detailed design and engineering to have the project ready to bid for construction by late summer 2026.
