NS RAPID and the Business of Growing Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill is a growing town. More residents choosing to live here. More employers, students, healthcare workers, and visitors moving through the corridor every day. By 2045, 43% of Chapel Hill's population and 55% of its jobs will be concentrated along the NS RAPID corridor. NS RAPID is how Chapel Hill builds the infrastructure to make that growth work.
"NS RAPID is about connecting the people, places, and opportunities that make Chapel Hill work — more reliably than ever before." Brian Litchfield, Transportation Director, Town of Chapel Hill
As Chapel Hill grows, every business needs to grow with it — and that means hiring. As Chapel Hill grows, businesses need to hire good people who live farther away. And staff who depend on transit don't have to plan their lives around an unpredictable schedule.
Projections show the potential for development around NS RAPID station areas. That means more neighbors. More complementary businesses. And more customers for local businesses.

The plan for the corridor — where the lanes go, where stations sit — is now 90% finalized. That's an engineering milestone that means the physical design is in place ahead of construction. Active construction starts late 2027 through 2029.
About NS RAPID
NS RAPID will bring dedicated bus lanes and modern stations to Chapel Hill's busiest corridor — making it easier for people to get to work, to school, and to businesses along the way.
