Safe Routes to School
Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day at Northside Elementary School
- The programming part brings together community members, teachers, school staff, public health workers, planners, and others to change how we move around our communities. We collaboratively encourage more children and families to walk, bike, or roll to school
- The infrastructure piece aims to improve safety conditions of routes to school. The Safe Routes to School program is a key component of the Town’s “Vision Zero” initiative– the Town’s strategy to increase the safety of people getting around town using various modes of transportation.
The Town of Chapel Hill is committed to improving connectivity and safety for everyone walking, biking, and rolling.

We're developing a Safe Routes to School Action Plan to identify programs, policies, and infrastructure recommendations that will promote safe walking and biking to school. The project includes all 14 schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District. The planning process is currently focused on developing draft recommendations, informed by previous stages of understanding existing conditions and behavior, which included direct feedback from parents, teachers, and staff. The plan will include recommendations across all schools in Chapel Hill as well as school-specific recommendations.
