Ongoing survey work at West Chapel Hill Cemetery

Last week, Town contractors conducted ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in and around the West Chapel Hill Cemetery. The purpose of this work is to determine if there are any unmarked graves near the area where the greenway project is proposed.

The West Chapel Hill Cemetery was originally established in 1949 by the Town of Chapel Hill to be used by African American residents of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Town staff are having ongoing conversations with descendant community members regarding the significance of the cemetery and how to incorporate that significance into the project.
