Project Update: Public engagement period ending Friday, October 9th.

Everywhere-to-Everywhere Greenways (E2E) is the Town’s vision for a Chapel Hill that is safer, more connected, and easier to navigate, regardless of where you’re going, and how you chose to get around.

When complete, the network’s 25+ miles of greenways will result in 57% of Chapel Hill residents living within ¼ mile of a transportation greenway, making greenways a reliable form of everyday transportation as our area grows.

Feasibility Study

A major step in achieving our E2E vision is a feasibility study to help us better understand and prioritize projects. Through field work, mapping, data analysis, and community input, the E2E feasibility study will:

  • Provide detailed cost estimates for each project

  • Create an implementation plan that establishes clear priorities and next steps for each project.

A $1 million grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program is funding the E2E feasibility study. The Town hired the consulting firm McAdams to assist with this work.

While this study will provide the next steps needed to proceed into design and construction, it does not directly construct the greenways.

For more information about mobility and greenway projects that are underway, visit our Transportation and Mobility Hub.

Thanks to everyone who attended our Open House on Monday - we had a great turnout and even better input. The engagement period for the Everywhere-to-Everywhere Greenways Feasibility Study will end tomorrow, Friday, October 9. Over the past three months, we've heard from many community members through the Route Option Feedback Map and at greenway pop-ups, focus groups, and numerous other public events. The project team will now review the feedback we've collected and work to understand the preferences and concerns raised by the community to help inform final route recommendations. Thank you to everyone who has participated!

As a reminder, community feedback is one of several factors that go into the decision about how to design and where to locate greenways. We also consider user experience, accessibility, environmental impacts, cost, safety, utilities, property impacts, construction and maintenance considerations, and overall network connectivity.

The Feasibility Study is expected to be completed by Spring 2027.

Many parts of a feasibility study can be done on a computer. For example, we can analyze topographic information, see where streams are, and identify property boundaries. However, there’s no replacement for seeing areas in person where you can get a feel for how conditions might be changing over time, how an area feels, and note opportunities and constraints along a greenway corridor. Our McAdams team and Town staff have been all over town walking and mapping these corridors. We’re documenting what we find so we can make the most informed decisions about how these greenways will be designed in the future. All of this analysis will result in multiple route options to weigh against each other and select the best options. We’ll have more to share soon.

Staff from the Office of Mobility and Greenways and McAdams were at the Chapel Hill Community Center for Trunk-or-Treat – handing out Halloween candy, visibility gear, and talking to community members about the Everywhere-to-Everywhere Feasibility Study.

Currently underway, the study is identifying 25 priority miles of proposed new greenways in Chapel Hill, determining their best routes, and generating a plan for the next steps to get them built.

We spoke to families (and some pirates, superheroes, and fairies) about the project’s vision for a Chapel Hill that is safer, more connected, and easier to navigate, and received input on where residents would like to see greater connectivity in our community.
